mount everest

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the earth. It was formed about 60 million years ago. In nepal it is called sagaramatha(means goddess of sky)in tibet. It is called chomolungma: (means mother goddess of the universe). Sir George Everest was the first person to record the height and location of Mt. Everest. This is where Mt. "Everest" got its name from (in American language) Latitude 27° 59' N, Longitude 86° 56' E. It's summit ridge separates Nepal and Tibet. You need oxygen to climb Mt. Everest. In 1808, the British began the Great Trigonometric Survey of India to determine the location and names of the world's highest mountains. Starting in Southern India, the survey teams gradually moved northward using giant 1,100 pound theodolites (each requiring 12 men to carry) to measure heights as accurately as possible. They reached the Himalayan foothills by the 1830s, but Nepal was unwilling to allow the British to enter the country because of suspicions of political aggression and possible annexation. Several requests by the surveyors to enter Nepal were turned down. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were first to climb Mt. Everest. Edmund Hillary was born on July 20, 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand, and he died on January 11, 2008 in Auckland, New Zealand. Tenzing Norgay was born in Namgyal Wandgi in late May of 1914. He died on May 9, 1986 in Darjeeling, India. During the 1996 climbing season, fifteen people died trying to come down from the summit, making it the deadliest single year in Mt. Everest history. Eight of them died on May 11th alone. information sited from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Everest
